Mary made play dough for the nephews and niece this past Christmas (2010) and they had so much fun playing with it (me, too!) We put Elijah in his high chair with a ball of play dough and his toy excavator and dump truck, and he kept chuckling, enjoying that he was up playing with the big kids. I asked Mary how she made it later, as it was the best homemade play dough I had ever seen. I made a batch for Elijah when we got home. His favorite thing was for me to make little balls, and he would stick one finger into the ball to make a little hole. Again and again! We'll definitely have to keep this for our craft book!
from the Voss Family Cookbook
1 c. flour
1 c. water
1/2 c. salt
2 t. cream of tartar
2 T. oil
food coloring
Mix dry ingredients, then add wet.
Cook over low heat in a heavy sauce pan or electric skillet until the mixture pulls away from the sides of the pan and forms a ball. This happens quickly. Divide into parts and knead in food coloring. Store in a ziploc bag.
